STRIKING SYRIA WILL NOT IMPROVE US CREDIBILITY

I just read the 4 page US assessment of its evidence on Syria.  It begins by saying "The United States Government assesses with high confidence that the Syrian government carried out a chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs on August 21, 2013." Beyond this there is nothing else. "High confidence" is just short of confirmation.

There are no satellite images showing that rockets were launched from Syrian government controlled areas at a specific time when these chemical weapon massacres took place, as the report claims.  Although the report states that numerous public media reports from different locations throughout the site of the attacks have been reviewed, no references are provided and the reader must research the internet on his/her own to verify the information used by US government.

There is nothing in the report, beyond the "assessment" of the US Government that would prove its veracity. While I am no fan of the Assad Regime, I must say this is Déjà vu: Iraq/Colin Powell/weapons of mass destruction.

The US claims that its credibility is at stake if it does not act against Syria. It says countries like North Korea and Iran are waiting in the lurch wondering if Syria will get away with using chemical weapons.  But the credibility of the US has already been devalued because of its lack of response to Israel's use of chemical weapons against the Palestinians.

But the US did nothing against Israel. Incidentally, UN buildings in Gaza were targets of the Israeli Army and Israel was in no way penalized for this egregious crime.

The "assessment" by the world is that hose who are allies of the US can use chemical weapons but those who do not subscribe to US dictates and its inconsistent foreign policy cannot.

Inevitably, US officials claim "national security" interests to justify what it does.

US foreign policy cannot be based on "national security" for the use of this policy allows every other country to claim its own "national security" to do whatever it wants thus creating chaos in the world. But wait, there is already chaos in the world. Could it be that the leader of the free world, the country that is the oldest constitutional democracy, is creating chaos in the world?

A constitutional democracy is the best form of government, yet the US is making a mockery of this system by its inconsistent and chaotic foreign policy. By allowing Israel to go unpunished for its use of chemical weapons and then punishing Syria for its use of chemical weapons leaves one to doubt the credibility of the US government. Striking Syria would not make the US credible. In fact, striking Syria would make the US less credible for its lack of response to the Israeli use of chemical weapons against the Palestinians.

US credibility is already at a low point. Striking Syria will not improve US credibility.

US foreign policy should be to encourage the people of every country to want to establish a democracy in their country.  The US should encourage the rebels in Syria to want to remove the President-for-Life Assad for a democratic government.  The US should be a shinning example that a constitutional democracy is the best form of government.

Leadership is the Art of Conviction

                A friend emailed me a YouTube clip about the “West Wing” TV show which included a map of the Holy Land that was drawn in 1709.  The “West Wing” is about the US Presidency.  This particular episode was aired on 1/9/02.  As I am interested in the Presidency, I viewed the clip.

Martin Sheen acts in the show as the President. He receives as a gift from his aid a map entitled “Canaan, Palestine” and tells his staff that he wants to frame it and put it in the White House.  His staff is vehemently opposed, expressing that it does not recognize Israel. When Sheen’s character President Bartlett explains that the map was drawn in 1709 and that Israel would not exist for another 250 years, they are not impressed, insisting that this would only bring trouble to the President.

This episode of “West Wing”, although a fictional TV show, gives us an insight as to how Presidents think and how those thoughts are limited by the constraints around them.   I wrote an article last year entitled “Constraints on Obama.”  http://fadizanayed.blogspot.com/2011/12/constraints-on-obama.html.  In it I give 6 reasons that limit the real US President in what he wants to do to bring peace between Palestinians and the Apartheid Israelis.  What I did not include in that article is the constraints from the people that work for the President.  

In the “West Wing” show every aide advised the President not to put up an “old” map of the Holy Land in the White House because “it does not recognize Israel and some people will find it offensive.”  The fictional President Bartlett responds by stating that no one opposed an aide’s map of the US when the original 13 states were colonies of Britain, when France owned 1/3 of the US (Louisiana Territory) and Mexico owned the remaining part.  The aides are unimpressed and tell the President that he does not need the headaches that will come from hanging an “old” map of Palestine in the White House.

The headache that the supporters of Apartheid Israel will give to anyone that hints in any way, shape or form that he is at least sympathetic to the Palestinian desire for freedom is massive.  Many politicians and others with any public persona who are perceived as “anti-Semitic” have been singled out by the Apartheid Israeli lobby.  The methods and power of that lobby is excellently documented by former Illinois Congressman Paul Finley in his book They Dare To Speak Out.  

Aides to the President are there to help the President in his tremendous task of leading the world as the only Super Power.  Avoiding trouble is one way aides assist the President.  Opposing Apartheid Israel in any way is trouble.   Succeeding US Presidents have said that the illegal Apartheid Israeli settlements are an “obstacle to peace.”  Yet, no President can ask Apartheid Israel to dismantle or stop building settlements despite the billions of dollars in aid that the US gives to it.  Why is this so? Simple answer: the Apartheid Israeli Lobby.

This lobby constrains US Presidents to a point that it is understood that politics is the art of the possible.  If a US President believed that it was politically possible to bring peace to the Israelis and Palestinians, then peace would have been achieved long ago.  But because of the power of the Apartheid Israeli lobby, US Presidents know that they cannot possibly bring peace to the Middle East. 

Succeeding Apartheid Israeli governments appease US Presidents by signing agreements with the Palestinians but their intent is not to have peace as they keep delaying final status talks because   internal Apartheid Israeli politics constrain it from making peace while Apartheid Israeli supporters constrain US Presidents from helping the parties achieve peace.  With these political constrains, peace is not possible.

Aides to the President know these political realities.  They can suggest actions that make it look like the US wants peace but this is political appeasement for internal US politics.  What these aides, President Obama, Apartheid Israeli leaders and lobbyists also know is that the reality of the population demographics in Apartheid Israel and Palestine is that in 2016 Palestinians will outnumber Jews. 

While Presidential aides will not advise the President to call Israel an Apartheid State as that would be political suicide, the reality is that is what Israel is.  Former President Jimmy Carter has called the situation in the West Bank an apartheid system of government—now he is shunned by Apartheid Israeli leaders.

The problem with Presidents is that they do not understand that they were elected to lead and sometimes leading people to what is the right thing to do is not always politically correct but morally right.  President Obama has stated that it is in the US national security interest to establish peace between Apartheid Israel and Palestine.  Yet the political constraints around him limit his ability to do what he believes is the right thing to do.

If President Abraham Lincoln did what was politically correct during his presidency, slavery in the US may have lingered longer in the US.  But President Lincoln knew that despite the Southern Slave States threat to secede from the US, slavery had to be eradicated and therefore issued the Emancipation Proclamation.  He led the nation to the high moral standards that he believed in despite the political consequences that were against him.

President Obama needs to be like President Lincoln.  President Obama knows that peace in the Middle East is the moral and right thing to achieve; therefore he should take the steps to achieve that peace.    

           Who am I kidding here?  President Obama needs to get reelected and thus the constraints against him are way too powerful than the morals that lead him to lead.  Politics is the art of the possible but leadership is the art of conviction.

Human Spirit should drive US Foreign Policy

 

            American foreign policy is hypocritical.  It needs to change. 

 

            American foreign policy has been based on the proposition that America will do anything as long as it is in the national security interest of America.  This is a wrong and abused foreign policy that only leads to hypocrisy.

 

            If one country can invade another country based on its perceived notion of national security, then why can’t every country use the same national security argument to do whatever it thinks it should in the world?

 

In the past 40 years America has invaded country after country.  In 1983 America went into Granada at will; in 1989 the US went into Panama to capture its President Manuel Noriega from his home; in 1990 US led coalition invaded Iraq during the first Gulf War; in 2001 the US invaded Afghanistan after 9/11; and then in 2003 the US reinvaded Iraq again.   All this, we are told, was done in the national security interest of the US.  Before the last invasion of Iraq, President George W. Bush administration told the world at the United Nations that Iraq was stock piling weapons of mass destructions--which were never found.

 

Also in the last 40 years, the US opposed the 1980 invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union; opposed the Libyan incursions into its neighbor Chad during the 1980s; and in 1989 opposed the occupation of Kuwait by Iraq.  

 

The hypocrisy is that the US allows itself to use the national security argument for its own specific needs but opposes that same argument to be used by any other country except Apartheid Israel.  The obvious flaw in a foreign policy that is based on the national security argument is that every other nation can also use the same argument to the detriment of world peace.  Why couldn’t the Soviet Union invade Afghanistan to protect its own national security interest?  Why couldn’t Iraq occupy Kuwait for its own national security interest?  Why can’t Israel continue the occupation of Palestinian land? 

 

It is obvious that these questions leads to one to believe that US opposition to “other countries” national security concerns are flawed and are selective.  It is not right for Iraq to occupy Kuwait but it is right for Apartheid Israel to occupy Palestine.  This inconsistency is seen by world public opinion as hypocrisy and as a suppression of the human spirit.  Then the US wonders why the people of the Middle East oppose US foreign policy.

 

Consistent with its inconsistent foreign policy, the US does not understand the Arab Spring revolutions sweeping the Arab world.   For decades, America has supported dictators, military leaders, juntas, presidents-for-life, kings and ruthless thugs who suppress the human spirit to be free.

 

America supported Ferdinand Marcos until the human spirit of the people of the Philippines overthrew him.  

 

America supported the Shaw of Iran until the human spirit of the people of Iran overthrew him and everything associated with the West and the US.

 

America supported the dictator Hosni Mubarak until the human spirit of the Egyptian people forced him out of power.

 

America looked the other way at the atrocities committed in Libya after Muammar Gaddafi renounced Tripoli's weapons of mass destruction programs and welcomed international inspections to verify that he would follow through on the commitment.

 

America continues to ignore the human spirit that yearns to be free.  America has forgotten its own human spirit during the American Revolution.   While Americans espouse the essence of what it means to be free, they fail to understand that this human spirit is in all mankind.

 

Palestinians have that same human spirit to be free.  Yet despite President Obama’s statement that it is in US national security interests to achieve peace between Israel and Palestine, the US cannot get its “staunch ally” to stop the building settlements that succeeding US administrations have stated are “obstacles to peace.”

 

Again, this inconsistency hurts US interests in the Middle East.

 

Foreign policy should be based on the human spirit to be free not on national security.  When America advocates the right of the human spirit to be free anywhere on the earth, America’s foreign policy becomes consistent.   Consequently, a free human spirit would naturally seek a democratic form of government.   Having democratic forms of governments is in the national security of the US.    

American foreign policy needs to support the human spirit to be free.
