MODERATE PALESTINIANS SORELY DISAPPOINTED

I have always been an optimist. I have always advocated peace. I was one of the first Palestinians to call for the recognition of Israel. I did so in 1980 on the University of Illinois - Chicago campus (although I attended Loyola University) and was ostracized by Fatah, Jabha and other Palestinian student groups.  I held my ground and was one of the few Palestinians in the Chicago area that could go to any group’s events.

I welcomed the Oslo Accords and attended the White House signing ceremony on September 13, 1993.  I witnessed the famous handshake between Arafat and Rabin and felt a sense of relief that the long hard nightmare for my people might soon be over. 

Since Oslo, however, I and many moderate Palestinians have been sorely disappointed.  

• We have seen the settlement expansion in the West Bank more than quadruple.  
• We have seen thousands of Palestinian agriculture acres (olive groves) destroyed. 
• We have seen a separation wall built around our towns and villages leaving isolated enclaves that basically imprison Palestinians especially men between the ages of 18 and 40. 
• We have seen a voluminous number of humiliating military check points that disgrace and dehumanize Palestinians. 
• We have seen democratic Palestinian elections whose results were not accepted by Israel and an American President who told us that one of the results of the Iraqi invasion of 2003 was a democratization of the Middle East. 
• We have also seen since Oslo, (unfortunately) the introduction of the Palestinian suicide bomber and the assassination of an Israeli Prime Minister (by an Israeli terrorist) which, in essence, killed the peace process.  
• We have also seen the right wing religious fanatic groups who have increased their power and because they have been and are part of the past and current coalition governments in Israel, in my opinion, hold the entire Middle East hostage.  
• We also see the continued marginalization of the Palestinians 
• because of inter-fighting; 
• because the world cannot accept that the Palestinian people have elected one party over another party that is repeat with corruption and that has not produced the liberation it has said it will deliver; and 
• because the power of the purse is used to blackmail the Palestinian West Bank leadership to accept what the people will not allow them to accept. 
• We have also witnessed in 2008-2009 and now again the barbarity of the Israeli devastating and disproportionate onslaught against our brothers and sisters and our children in Gaza as the continued Israeli blockade causes severe economic conditions of food, water and medical shortages for which, we are told, the Palestinians cannot repel and for which the world flotilla aid campaign cannot break.

Because we have seen all these demoralizing aspects of the conflict, I, as well as many moderate (if not all) Palestinians, have abandoned the two state solution.  

• It is inconceivable that the 600,000 settlers in the West Bank will get up and leave.  This is not the Gaza Strip where 21 settlements illegally inhabited by 21,000 extreme Zionist settlers can be disbanded and the settlers removed.  
• It is inconceivable that the right wing ultra-conservative/orthodox parties within Israel will agree to give up Areas C especially since their power is increasing and especially since the recent poll in Israel tells us that the majority of Israelis have no problem living in an Apartheid like state.  
• It is inconceivable that Israel will abandon its policy to allow a Palestinian limited state within Area A and parts of Area B, on the one hand and another Palestinian entity in Gaza, as the Liberman Plan has so stated for Gaza. 

Inconceivability is only in the political realm.  In realty however, the numbers (population growth of the Palestinians visa via the Israelis) will force Israel to rethink its position.  My doubts are in succeeding Israel requests to endlessly talk to no end. The Israeli policy is "let us agree to agree in the future" but the future never comes because Israel always finds ways to interpret agreements by defining terms as it defines them. My pessimism is in endless talks that attempt to fill the glass with water but the glass is always half empty.

For Palestinians, the concept of a two state solution is illusionary. Since Oslo, succeeding Israeli governments have allowed the ever expanding settlements on illegally confiscated Palestinian land, thus creating “facts on the ground.” Israel has played its hand too long. Israeli leaders thought they could exhaust us into submission; that as long as they continued to build illegal settlements and continued to appease the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank while driving a wedge between West Bank and Gaza leaders, they could frustrate the Palestinians into accepting two Palestinian entities, one in the West Bank with Area A and part of Area B; and the other in Gaza.  Thus in essence, Israel has been trying for a three state solution.  Palestinians cannot and will not accept this.

By playing its hand too long, Israel has lost the moderate Palestinians. 

Moderate Palestinians are seeking other means to assert Palestinian fundamental rights. Moderate Palestinians wholeheartedly support the Palestinian request to join the United Nations General Assembly with pre-1967 borders but understand that this is only a prelude to a one state solution to the conflict. We also support the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against the Israeli occupation. We welcome the emergency of a new generation of Palestinians who will pick up their stone and fight for the dignity and well-being of future Palestinian generations.  We also call upon the Palestinian factions to reconcile their differences and believe that the Palestinian house needs to be united immediately.

What can you do for Palestine?

                I just read the tweeted words “Ask what you can do for Palestine, since Palestine cannot do much for you at the moment” by docjazzmusic. How poignant this statement really is especially after I received some heat from my last blog questioning whether some Palestinians were proud to be Palestinian. 

            I received favorable and unfavorable responses from my readers.  The favorable were very encouraging.  Many requested to be added to my mailing list and even suggested others who would like to receive my blogs.  The negative reaction came from my Christian Ramallah Family which is typical as most are apolitical.  This saddens me.

            That apolitical attitude has been inherited by many young adults of Ramallah, a Christian family numbering over 40,000 living in America.  While I know of some Ramallah young adults who do write letters to their Congressional representative and write letters to newspapers, there are much more who just do not care about Palestine.  Many have adopted the older generation’s mentality and have given up on any hope of seeing an independent democratic Palestinian State.  

            I have tried on varying levels to change this apolitical attitude to no avail.  I have reasoned with their conscience by stating that had our parents and grandparents not been fortunate to receive visas to migrate to the United States, we could have been exiled to Lebanon or Jordan and forced to live in refugee camps.  I have tried to persuade them “to do something for Palestine” by attending demonstrations, rallies and activities relating to Palestine. I have tried to post articles on websites in the name of the Ramallah Federation only to have them deleted.   How unfortunate that a post about an upcoming Super Bowl Party can be posted but not one of my articles about Palestine.

            Has it come to that point in our assimilation in America that our youth want nothing to do with Palestine? Are we that annoyed to receive a message that reminds us about Palestine but we welcome a message about a Super Bowl Party? 

            There is a tremendous untapped power in all Palestinian youth. The power in the combination of these youth and the various social media on the internet is awesome.  The Palestinian leadership needs to harness and harvest this energy for Palestine.  Have we not seen how powerful the Facebook and Tweeter were in the Arab Spring, especially in Egypt?

            The Palestinian leadership needs to establish a relationship between these social media active youth and Palestine.  A love for Palestine needs to be established, not in just feelings, as we all love Palestine, but also in action.

            Simple interactive social activities can get these youth to do something for Palestine.  A Facebook page can be created whereby Palestinian youth can write their favorite story told by their grandparents. Another page can ask these youth to post pictures of grandparents to give identity to our heritage. A love for Palestine needs to be established in actions but first it takes leadership to harness and harvest our youth.

            Actions on the internet lead to education.  When we repost videos and images of Apartheid Israeli soldiers holding at gunpoint 8 and 9 year old Palestinian children we educate all the friends. We need to create more actions.

            What can you do for Palestine?  Post a poem about Palestine, a picture of your home in Palestine, or a simply message saying how much you love Palestine.  Keep Palestine alive in your heart and on the Ramallah Federation Facebook sites.

هل ما تفعله من اجل فلسطين؟

            لقد حاولت على مستويات مختلفة لتغيير هذا الموقف غير سياسية من دون جدوى. لدي مسبب مع ضمائرهم بالقول ان آبائنا وأجدادنا لم يكن محظوظا في الحصول على تأشيرات للهجرة إلى الولايات المتحدة ، فقد كنا في المنفى الى لبنان أو الأردن ، وأجبروا على العيش في مخيمات اللاجئين. لقد حاولت اقناعهم "أن تفعل شيئا من أجل فلسطين" وذلك بحضور المظاهرات والمسيرات والنشاطات المتعلقة بفلسطين. لقد حاولت أن نشر مقالات على مواقع الانترنت باسم الاتحاد رام الله فقط ليكون لهم حذفها. كيف يمكن أن المؤسف أن يتم نشر آخر عن وجود طرف القادمة سوبر السلطانية ولكن ليست واحدة من مقالاتي عن فلسطين.


            وقد حان لهذه النقطة في الاستيعاب لدينا في أميركا بأن شبابنا لا يريدون القيام به مع فلسطين؟ نحن أن ازعاج لتلقي الرسالة التي تذكرنا عن فلسطين ولكننا نرحب رسالة حول طرف السوبر بول؟


            هناك قوة هائلة غير مستغلة في جميع الشباب الفلسطيني. السلطة في الجمع بين هؤلاء الشباب ومختلف وسائل الإعلام الاجتماعية على الانترنت هو رهيبة. القيادة الفلسطينية بحاجة لتسخير هذه الطاقة والحصاد من أجل فلسطين.لم نشهد مدى قوة الفيسبوك وتويتر كانت في الربيع العربي ، وخصوصا في مصر؟


            القيادة الفلسطينية بحاجة إلى إقامة علاقة بين هؤلاء الشباب وسائل الاعلام الاجتماعية النشطة وفلسطين. حب لفلسطين بحاجة إلى أن تنشأ ، وليس فقط في المشاعر ، وكلنا نحب فلسطين ، ولكن أيضا في العمل.

Must A Palestinian Set Himself Ablaze?

                Desperate situations call for desperate actions.   In Morocco, 5 students, occupying the Defense Ministry for a week, set themselves ablaze after they poured gasoline on their bodies when police would not allow food to enter the building.  They were protesting lack of jobs, especially for college graduates.[1]

           

This desperate action has become a norm in Arab countries after Mohammed Bouazizi, a Tunisian vendor, set his body ablaze when a police officer humiliatingly slapped him, confiscated his vegetable cart and then fined him an equivalent to a day wage.[2] The vegetable cart was Bouazizi’s livelihood.  This desperate action sparked the Arab Spring and within 10 days after his death on January 4, 2011 the rule of the dictator President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali was over in Tunisia.

           

Americans know very well the concept of this human spirit, although not to the extreme of setting oneself ablaze.  Yet, whether one sets himself ablaze in Tunisia to protest the laws of a dictator in 2010 or dresses up like an Indian and dumps the tea imported from England as a way to protest the tea tax imposed by the British King in 1773, the human spirit is expressing the same concept—the will to be free from all forms of tyranny, including “taxation without representation.”  Still American’s have forgotten the revolutionary spirit, having been liberated from England over 230 years ago.  

Americans do not understand that the human spirit to be free did not end when the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.  People around the world are still governed by tyrants, kings and presidents-for-life to this very day.  The human spirit to be free still cries out for freedom in Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, The Gulf States, and Palestine, as well as many other places around the globe.

            In Palestine, the Apartheid State of Israel operates a “taxation without representation” system of government over the Palestinians.  Apartheid Israel collects customs and Value Added Tax on goods that ultimately are sold in the Palestine. It is Apartheid Israel and not the Palestinians that sets the tax rates on customs and Value Added Tax thus taxing the Palestinians without any representation as Palestinians do not have the right to vote in Apartheid Knesset elections despite Republican Presidential Candidate Senator Rick Santorum’s belief that the West Bank is captured territory and therefore is a part of Israel.  As such, Apartheid Israel taxes the Palestinians without representation.

            While other conditions point to an obvious apartheid system in the way Israel is treating the 4.5 million Palestinians under its occupational control, this one aspect of Apartheid Israel’s tight grip on Palestinians cries out for social justice.  By controlling and collecting the customs rate and the Value Added Tax on goods imported into Palestine, Apartheid Israel controls the Palestinians ability to use these funds for public services such as electricity, health care, public service salaries, public works and other government run agencies. This has never been more to the point when in 2006-2007 Israel withheld the collected taxes from the Palestinian National Authority because the Palestinian people democratically elected a Hamas run government.  This financial blackmail was used again this past autumn when Apartheid Israel withheld collected taxes as a punishment for the reconciliation attempts between Fatah and Hamas.

           

            This control of revenues by Apartheid Israel is absolutely absurd.  The fact that Apartheid Israel has used the control of these funds to twice punish the Palestinians for actions that it did not approve of is unacceptable. Palestinians must rise up against this strong-arm scheme to manipulate it into what Apartheid Israel wants. 

This situation is desperate by itself.  However, the situation in Palestine is much worse. With the hundreds of checkpoints that control every move of the Palestinians; the destruction of thousands of acres of olive groves; the siege of Gaza; the daily policy of fear inflicted by apartheid Israeli soldiers; the continued confiscation of Palestinian land to build illegal settlements; and the apartheid system of government run by Israel in the West Bank and Gaza where there are two different laws for two different peoples, the situation in Palestine has become more desperate than ever. 

But does this desperate situation require a Palestinian to set himself ablaze for the world to take notice that Apartheid Israel needs to be exposed?  The human spirit resonates within every human being; it did not live in the hearts of the American revolutionists and then die off. No! It lives in every human being. Americans need to understand that as long as the human spirit in any people around the globe is not free, we are all not free.

            السياسة الخارجية الأميركية هو النفاق. انها تحتاج الى تغيير.

            وقد استند السياسة الخارجية الأميركية على افتراض أن أمريكا لن تفعل أي شيء طالما أنه يصب في مصلحة الأمن القومي الأمريكية. هذه هي سياسة خاطئة وسوء المعاملة الأجنبية التي لا يؤدي إلا إلى النفاق.

            إذا كان بلد واحد يمكن أن تغزو دولة أخرى على أساس مفهومها المتصورة للأمن الوطني ، ثم لماذا لا يستطيع كل بلد تستخدم نفس الحجة للأمن القومي للقيام بكل ما ينبغي أن يفكر في العالم؟
 في السنوات ال 40 الماضية غزت أمريكا بلد بعد. في عام 1983 ذهب إلى أميركا في غرناطة و؛ في عام 1989 في الولايات المتحدة ذهبت الى بنما للقبض على رئيسها مانويل نورييغا من منزله ، وفي عام 1990 غزت قوات التحالف بقيادة الولايات المتحدة العراق خلال حرب الخليج الأولى ، في عام 2001 قامت الولايات المتحدة بغزو أفغانستان بعد 11 / 9 ؛ ثم في عام 2003 reinvaded الولايات المتحدة العراق مرة أخرى. كل هذا ، كما قيل لنا ، وكان ذلك في مصلحة الأمن القومي للولايات المتحدة. قبل الغزو الأخير للعراق ، قال الرئيس الاميركي جورج بوش العالم في الأمم المتحدة أن العراق كان سهم تتراكم أسلحة الدمار الشامل -- والتي لم يعثر عليها قط.
 أيضا في السنوات ال 40 الماضية ، عارضت الولايات المتحدة غزو أفغانستان عام 1980 من قبل الاتحاد السوفياتي ، ويعارض عمليات التوغل الليبية في تشاد جارتها خلال 1980s ، وعام 1989 عارضت احتلال الكويت من قبل العراق.
 النفاق هو أن الولايات المتحدة تسمح لنفسها استخدام حجة الأمن القومي لتلبية الاحتياجات الخاصة بها لكنها تعارض هذه الحجة نفسها ليتم استخدامها من قبل أي دولة أخرى باستثناء إسرائيل الفصل العنصري. الخلل واضح في السياسة الخارجية التي تقوم على حجة الأمن القومي هو أن كل أمة أخرى يمكن أيضا استخدام نفس الحجة على حساب السلام العالمي. لماذا لم يستطع الاتحاد السوفياتي بغزو أفغانستان لحماية مصلحتها الأمن القومي؟ لماذا لا يمكن احتلال العراق للكويت مصلحتها الأمن القومي؟ لماذا لا يمكن أن تستمر إسرائيل في احتلال الأراضي الفلسطينية؟
 فمن الواضح أن هذه الأسئلة تقود إلى واحد إلى الاعتقاد بأن معارضة الولايات المتحدة الى "دول أخرى" مخاوف أمنية وطنية هي معيبة وانتقائية. ليس من حق العراق لاحتلال الكويت ، وإنما هو حق لإسرائيل الفصل العنصري باحتلال فلسطين. وينظر الى هذا التناقض من قبل الرأي العام العالمي والنفاق ونتيجة لقمع الروح البشرية. ثم يتساءل : لماذا الولايات المتحدة وشعوب الشرق الأوسط يعارضون السياسة الخارجية الامريكية.
 تمشيا مع سياستها الخارجية غير متناسقة ، فإن الولايات المتحدة لا يفهم ثورات الربيع العربية التي تجتاح العالم العربي. على مدى عقود ، دعمت أميركا الطغاة والقادة العسكريين وjuntas والرؤساء مدى الحياة ، لا يرحم الملوك والبلطجية الذين يحجزون روح الإنسان أن يكون حرا.
 دعمت أميركا فرديناند ماركوس حتى روح الإنسان للشعب الفلبين أطاح به.
 دعمت أميركا شو ايران حتى روح الإنسان للشعب الإيراني وأطاح به كل ما يرتبط بها مع الغرب والولايات المتحدة.
 أمريكا دعمت الديكتاتور حسني مبارك حتى روح الإنسان للشعب المصري أرغموه على الخروج من السلطة.
 بدت أمريكا في الاتجاه الآخر في الفظائع التي ارتكبت في ليبيا بعد معمر القذافي تخلى عن أسلحة طرابلس لبرامج أسلحة الدمار الشامل ورحب عمليات تفتيش دولية للتحقق من انه من خلال متابعة على الالتزام.
 أمريكا مستمرة في تجاهل روح الإنسان الذي يتوق إلى أن يكون حرا. قد نسي أميركا روحها الإنسان الخاصة خلال الثورة الأميركية. في حين أن الأمريكيين يعتنقون جوهر ما يعنيه أن يكون حرا ، انهم لا يفهمون أن هذه الروح البشرية في جميع البشر.
 الفلسطينيون أن روح الإنسان نفسه أن يكون حرا. حتى الآن على الرغم من تصريح الرئيس أوباما أنه في مصلحة الأمن القومي الأميركي لتحقيق السلام بين إسرائيل وفلسطين ، فإن الولايات المتحدة لا تستطيع الحصول على "حليف قوي" لوقف بناء المستوطنات التي تنجح الادارات الاميركية قد ذكرت هي "عقبات في طريق السلام".
 مرة أخرى ، هذا التضارب يؤذي المصالح الأميركية في الشرق الأوسط.

Human Spirit should drive US Foreign Policy

 

            American foreign policy is hypocritical.  It needs to change. 

 

            American foreign policy has been based on the proposition that America will do anything as long as it is in the national security interest of America.  This is a wrong and abused foreign policy that only leads to hypocrisy.

 

            If one country can invade another country based on its perceived notion of national security, then why can’t every country use the same national security argument to do whatever it thinks it should in the world?

 

In the past 40 years America has invaded country after country.  In 1983 America went into Granada at will; in 1989 the US went into Panama to capture its President Manuel Noriega from his home; in 1990 US led coalition invaded Iraq during the first Gulf War; in 2001 the US invaded Afghanistan after 9/11; and then in 2003 the US reinvaded Iraq again.   All this, we are told, was done in the national security interest of the US.  Before the last invasion of Iraq, President George W. Bush administration told the world at the United Nations that Iraq was stock piling weapons of mass destructions--which were never found.

 

Also in the last 40 years, the US opposed the 1980 invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union; opposed the Libyan incursions into its neighbor Chad during the 1980s; and in 1989 opposed the occupation of Kuwait by Iraq.  

 

The hypocrisy is that the US allows itself to use the national security argument for its own specific needs but opposes that same argument to be used by any other country except Apartheid Israel.  The obvious flaw in a foreign policy that is based on the national security argument is that every other nation can also use the same argument to the detriment of world peace.  Why couldn’t the Soviet Union invade Afghanistan to protect its own national security interest?  Why couldn’t Iraq occupy Kuwait for its own national security interest?  Why can’t Israel continue the occupation of Palestinian land? 

 

It is obvious that these questions leads to one to believe that US opposition to “other countries” national security concerns are flawed and are selective.  It is not right for Iraq to occupy Kuwait but it is right for Apartheid Israel to occupy Palestine.  This inconsistency is seen by world public opinion as hypocrisy and as a suppression of the human spirit.  Then the US wonders why the people of the Middle East oppose US foreign policy.

 

Consistent with its inconsistent foreign policy, the US does not understand the Arab Spring revolutions sweeping the Arab world.   For decades, America has supported dictators, military leaders, juntas, presidents-for-life, kings and ruthless thugs who suppress the human spirit to be free.

 

America supported Ferdinand Marcos until the human spirit of the people of the Philippines overthrew him.  

 

America supported the Shaw of Iran until the human spirit of the people of Iran overthrew him and everything associated with the West and the US.

 

America supported the dictator Hosni Mubarak until the human spirit of the Egyptian people forced him out of power.

 

America looked the other way at the atrocities committed in Libya after Muammar Gaddafi renounced Tripoli's weapons of mass destruction programs and welcomed international inspections to verify that he would follow through on the commitment.

 

America continues to ignore the human spirit that yearns to be free.  America has forgotten its own human spirit during the American Revolution.   While Americans espouse the essence of what it means to be free, they fail to understand that this human spirit is in all mankind.

 

Palestinians have that same human spirit to be free.  Yet despite President Obama’s statement that it is in US national security interests to achieve peace between Israel and Palestine, the US cannot get its “staunch ally” to stop the building settlements that succeeding US administrations have stated are “obstacles to peace.”

 

Again, this inconsistency hurts US interests in the Middle East.

 

Foreign policy should be based on the human spirit to be free not on national security.  When America advocates the right of the human spirit to be free anywhere on the earth, America’s foreign policy becomes consistent.   Consequently, a free human spirit would naturally seek a democratic form of government.   Having democratic forms of governments is in the national security of the US.    

American foreign policy needs to support the human spirit to be free.
